My new iPhone

I finally committed - I bought an iPhone yesterday! The Apple Store at the South Coast Mall was closed for remodeling, so I had to rush to the Fashion Island Mall before closing time (7PM on a Saturday, can you believe this? Sounds almost like France!).
And I am proud to say that I got it before Vincent! (OK, only 30 seconds or so before him, just credit card processing time). But still, before.
Now got to learn how to use it ;-)

From Barcelona, Spain - Burton Group Catalyst Conference

Today I presented a session on Collaborating for Open Source Interoperability at the European Catalyst Conference in Barcelona, Spain. I was actually presenting this under the Open Solutions Alliance banner - as one of the few Europe-based OSA representatives.
The session went well, I got interesting questions - from the Burton analysts. But I was surprised at how little open source coverage (and receptivity) there was at the Burton conference overall. Burton has this reputation for dealing mostly with Identity Management and Security, and trying to expand into Application Platforms. I would have thought these to be domains with a lot of open source. But only a few of the senior IT managers in the room admitted using open source (maybe they wouldn't admit anything, for security reasons...). And the SAP guy who had presented before me probably didn't care to hear about open source, for he left at the beginning of my presentation (I still took several stabs at SAP).
Actually, to be fair, there was ONE aspect of the OSA story that got several folks curious about: the IP compliance part. And then a gentleman from Nokia asked for my business card and told me he will be in touch, he wants me to come to Finland to deliver the same presentation (I hear they have good vodka there!).
Well, on the positive side of things - it shows there is still work to do for marketing people in open source companies. Which is good for me from an employment perspective :-)

Busy month... no time for blogging

When I started this blog, I decided I would post several times a week. Obviously, this did not happen... I guess it's a good thing to be too busy.
It's true that October went pretty fast:
- We launched PR in Germany, and did a press tour in Munich where we met several German IT editors
- We attended the MySQL User Conferences in London, Munich and Paris (I only went to the London one, where I presented in the keynote)
- We hired two new senior business people: Stan Bailey as VP of Sales in the US, Martin Lange as Business Development Manager in Germany
- We issued a number of important press releases, started new marketing campaigns...
And this week, I am going to Barcelona, to the Burton Group's Catalyst conference where I will present a session "Collaborating for Open Source Interoperability" as a representative of the OSA.

Several important things also happened outside of Talend in October:
- SAP bought Business Objects - good for BO's stockholders, but really bad for their customers (see Bertrand Diard's blog post on the subject). Also bad for the vendor independence.
- French transportation services went on strike to defend their "avantages acquis" - compensations they got when they had to shovel coal in the furnace of their engines.
- Orange announced they would offer the iPhone in France at the end of November
- and a lot of other things that escape my mind at this time...

Gearing up for more busy weeks:
- Catalyst Conference in Barcelona
- TDWI Conference in Orlando
- TDWI Conference in Amsterdam
- and more announcements!

Check out this interview

Last week I got interviewed by Dennis Byron of ebizQ. The piece he wrote "Dennis Byron's Open Source Series: Talking to... Talend" was published on Friday, and I like it - check it out.
