[insight] Speed Wins.
"... IBM is claiming this represents the third generation of datawarehousing. The first wave used query and reporting to understand what had happened; the second wave took this further, using online analytical processing and data mining to analyze historical data and recommend future action. IBM contends that dynamic warehousing enables firms to use that historical analysis for making real-time business decision..." - computerweekly.com (3.19.07)
In the past, if you were big like GM, GE, Ford, etc., you win. But in the future, you must be fast. Companies are innovating at a blazing speed. Today's hot product becomes tomorrow's cold product. The world is changing so quickly, and your shareholders are becoming more impatient than ever. Your competitors are making smart decisions very quickly. Big pharmaceutical companies are looking for partnerships with small bio-tech firms in order to leverage on their speed. M&A activities are increasing, and this is one sign that big firms know they do not have time to develop capabilities internally; they choose to pay premiums to buy the capabilities in order to keep up with the competition. Google bought YouTube to become the leader in the video stream industry overnight. IBM bought PWC Consulting practice in order to get into the service industry as quickly as possible. Speed now is the critical factor in your business success.
So What.
You cannot separate Speed from BI and BI from Speed. BI makes C-level leaders to make accurate decision fast. Those who want to be smart and fast should adopt BI as their core corporate strategy. BI can enable them to make smart decisions in real-time as the article states.
And finally, here is a wake up call to all companies around the world -
If you are Big and Fast, Halleluah !
If you are Big and Slow, Watch out !
If you are Small and Fast, Keep on !
If you are Small and Slow, I am sorry !
