BI is a Construction Business.
When I graduated with a (CS) Computer Science degree 5 years ago, I had no idea how it would help my career.
When I graduated with an MBA 2 years ago, I had no idea how it would help my career.
Now I know how CS and MBA can help my future career.
I have been in the BI field almost for 2 years now and clearly see a big disconnection between IT and Business. Many in IT department often get caught up with technical details and fail to see the overall picture of the business. Many in business units know how the big picture works but often grow inattentive to details.
In addition, from my experience, people in IT tend to have a very different personality from those in Business - IT people being more reserved and listening whereas business people being more outgoing and outspoken (no stereotype - solely from my observation). This personality difference creates an even bigger disconnection between IT and Business.
However, this notorious and seemingly un-resolving conflict that has lasted for many decades is actually a good news for a professional who has an engineering plus MBA background. Engineering know-how helps you to cultivate technical skills with strong attention to details while MBA helps you to develop keen business sense with much needed people skills.
People with this dual background have the ability to connect people in IT and Business and thus can help both parties to better communicate with each other. Connecting IT and Business is a key requirement that all BI projects need to fulfill.
In fact, BI is a construction business that aims to build a virtual bridge between IT and Business.
