Collaborative Infovis in co-located Environments

In the meanwhile, in the area of Interaction Design, the trends seems to be focused on simple and friendly approaches, like for example the "touchy iPhone or (better) some multi-touch solutions (like Jeff Hanns work).

In this scenario, the project by Petra Insenberg (thanks to Marco for the link) illustrate an interesting solution to use effective information visualization tools in a co-located environment.

The project is based on a smartboard touch screen where users (from 2 to 4) could work on an a shared information space, using the same data-set but through several infovis tools (like treepies or graph-maps for example).

The project is interesting for these reasons:

  • the interaction mode
  • the shared and the collaborative approach
  • the effective use of infovis tools to understand and solve issues

In next days, well have a brief interview with Petra, in order to get a deeper understanding of the project and to have a look to the future of shared, collaborative infovis spaces.

In the meanwhile, have a look to the project details, mainly the paper and the videos about user observation and the system running.

Using infovis to observe (and understand?) Italian political system

Some days ago, the guys from BlogMeter asked me to investigate some ways of understanding data they collected about the words used by people on the internet to desciribe italian politic.

Even if the data I got (in a standard graphml format) is a typical graph, using a node-edge-network representation could not be so usefull to get the full overview...having so much relations was not easy to read and could not lead user to get a proper overview.

So I started to investigate the opportunity to use some ArcCircle system representations to get the best overview (like I did one year ago to visualize links among italian Blogs).

This option was also not so usefull to understand the "mood of the whole italian internet community, so I moved to a more classical TagCloud approach (here some screenshots) in order to improve the comprehension working on the meaning of word-sizes.

In these terms, the project is about to calibrate the size of words based on 3 parameters:

Arms in the world

Today, through a link from the online edition of Corriere della Sera (the main italian newspaper) I had a look to an interesting web visualization (a Rich Internet Application made using Processing) that is able to visualize historical flows of arms around the globe.

Data are from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and they describe the flows of weapons as legal trades among countries and, for this reason, they dont count the total and real amount of them used into a single country.

I also tried to play with the processing visualization, discovering that Italy (and, in general, the main countries) are doing good business selling arms to developing countries or african states.

It seems interesting to investigate this database further, in order to answer to questions like these:
