Mapping the globe...in a collaborative way
Talking about maps and localized services ( as Yahoo, Msn Local, or Google do ) there is an interesting initiative that brings together several areas and ideas: its the OpenStreetMap project that, as from the source, "aimed squarely at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them.
The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive or unexpected ways.
The whole project to me offer several new interesting scenario:

When infovis helps to understand Justice
Browsing on the net alwys give us some cool suprises...
mainly if browsing starts for a reason very different from the object we got.
Today is time to talk about JusticeMapping: that offers their "visual maps services to legislators, government agencies, research institutes, technical assistance providers, and the media.
On their nice Ajax web site is possible to browse their archive and give a look at how visual maps are used to increase and improve the knwoledge on geografical and social fenomenas.

Mobile infovis. A new actor on the Stage
We talked about mobile infovis some time ago, but today something new happened.
I was looking at the cool features of the new Apple IPhone and I was surprised by the rich User Interface and User Experience allowed by the new mobile device.
In terms of infovis related information, iPhone also offers a dedicated version of GoogleMaps that is, as seen from the Flash demo in the web site, the best GoogleMap Mobile application ever.
Infact it seems to have good transitions, a wide screen, a complete and user friendly keyboard and a visual oriented approach that, on small devices having more and more features and information, are vital.
Apple, well done !

Five Things You May Not Know About Me
Andrea invited me to join to a nice social game: the blog tag.
So, lets start the game:
1 - Im not from Milan
Even if I live in Milan from almost 9 years, i come from a nice, green county of Italy: Abruzzo.
My home village is a very small town famous for susages, cheeses and red wines .
Its called Torano Nuovo ( you can have a look to some picture from google or from my flickr account ).
2 - I love good and typical local food
As my 90 kilos suggest, I love eating specialities from each county of Italy and of the world.
I mainly love: pasta, pork and sheep meat, cheeses and sushi !
I dont like FastFoods, even if sometime they allow to store some energy on low-cost travels
3 - My favourite team
As a typical italian medium guy, I love football even if my favourite team is Inter... one of the biggest and oldest team in Europe that, from a long period ( from 1989 ) didnt won any Scudetto ( the Italian premier league ).
During this season the team is first on the table and I really hope that on 2007 we could have a winning party in the last match
4 - My favourite movie
I love cinema and Im really disappointed because lately I dont have the time I would to watch movies...
I really loved Spielbergs "Shindlers List and I think it will remain the best movie ever, even if the Italian "La vita รจ bella from Benigni could be considered the second on the list.
5 - The think I like more and the think I really dont like
Finally, I can say that the think is like more is traveling around the world and getting in touch with people living far from me, in order to expand the comprehension of different cultures and life style.
On the other hand I really dont like fashion...event if its one of the Italian tipycal products...
Just to continue this funny social game, I will try to invite other interesting bloggers:
Emanuele Quintarelli, Moritz Stefaner, Matteo Penzo, Enrico Bertini, Jeffrey Heer

Infovis: a mass tool to understand war conseguences
As a first post of 2007, I would like to point your attention to an usefull service offered by the NewYorkTime its called "3000 faces of death".
Its a web based infovis tool that intends to show in analytical way data about US army people died in Iraq war; it could be considered as a sort of small evolution of the Minards famous interactive infographic.
The most accurate part of the application is the "Analysis area, where its possible to understand when and where people died in Iraq.
The application uses Dynamic Querying to display, according to the selected time period, the total amonut of died men, their age groups, race, Type of Duty, Branch and the geografical areas involved.
To improve data understanding I think that some other features could be added; for example asking about which was the worst day for White men or when people have been killed in the Falluja region and more relational questions.
Actionscript technology have been used once more to offer a broader audicence infovis web based application.
