Stresses On Our Data
April 25, 2006
During a recent interview with an IT reporter the reporter made an interesting assertion, he said, "Frank, do you think data quality is taking off because people are trying to use their data in different ways, other than for the purpose it was originally intended?"

Normalize
April 24, 2006
There appears to be a bit of confusion around the word "normalize" especially when it is used in the data quality context. Depending on your background, be it data quality, data modeling, statistics, chemistry, etc. normalization can have special meaning to you. Take for example the steel foundry business. In steel making normalization is part of the tempering process as described here:
Toughening process- This process is intended to produce a structure possessing good strength and ductility in steels by means of Normalizing. Improved machinability, grain structure refinement, homogenization and modification of residual stresses are among the reasons for which normalizing is done.

Do I Need to Cleanse All My Data?
April 13, 2006
The answer is no you do not need to cleanse ALL of your data all at once. There is a caveat that I will get to later. People worry about cleaning ALL their data. A data manager from a pharmaceutical company posed this question: "We have a database of doctors. Some of them are retired. Do I need to cleanse the data for all of them?"

Data Management or Data Confusion?
April 7, 2006
I received the following questions via e-mail from a frequent attendee of our Webinars. Normally I just respond to the e-mail, but in this case I thought the answers should be shared with my blog readers too.
I am conducting research in order to develop a plan for implementing a Data Quality and Compliance Program into my business unit and my research has created confusion for me with regard to all of the various nomenclatures that touch on Data Quality, and to some degree, Compliance.
I find multiple references to Data Quality, Data Management, Data Governance and Data Stewardship. There appears to be significant overlap across the roles and responsibilities of each of the titles and I'm looking for your insight into how to define the four roles. How do they differ, where are they the same, and what would utopia be for an infrastructure that integrates all of the above?

Business Objects Finalizes Acquisition of Firstlogic
April 6, 2006
It's official, Business Objects has completed its acquisition of Firstlogic. I and others have often wondered what the end game would look like. After working eighteen years helping build Firstlogic I get to see the final chapter in this book written, and the first chapter in a new book started.
